Beliefs Build And Protect Lies

Telling a lie is an act with a sharp focus. It is designed to insert a particular falsehood at a specific point in a set or system of beliefs, in order to avoid the consequences of having that point occupied by the truth. This requires a degree of craftsmanship, in which the teller of the lie submits to objective constraints imposed by what he takes to be the truth. The liar is inescapably concerned with truth-values. In order to invent a lie at all, he must think he knows what is true. And in order to invent an effective lie, he must design his falsehood under the guidance of that truth.

On the other hand, a person who undertakes to bullshit his way through has much more freedom. His focus is panoramic rather than particular. He does not limit himself to inserting a certain falsehood at a specific point, and thus he is not constrained by the truths surrounding that point or intersecting it. He is prepared to fake the context as well, so far as need requires.

Princeton Philosophy Professor Harry G. Frankfurt wrote those thoughts in his 2005 book, On Bullshit. Frankfurt does an excellent job explaining the difference between lying and bullshit. We find ourselves in a world where liars and bullshit artists become political rock stars. The inequities in a capitalistic society give these modern-day bandits the ammunition they need to keep the lies and bull shit coming.

Beliefs have salient features. And one of those features is they begin to erode through the years. Beliefs are a mixture of old and new thoughts, so they are always vulnerable when new thoughts arrive. So if a fashionable societal belief doesn’t fit into a person’s perception of the world they live in at a particular moment, they lie. The lies create fresh beliefs, and they become new truths.

Beliefs act like invisible cells. They build perceptions and choices to protect the lies. The liar lives in the glory of his tweaked beliefs. The liar becomes the truthful one in his world of perceptions. If others don’t agree with the liar’s perceptions, they become liars. But the bullshit artist keeps on painting a world of altered truths until the bullshit propels him to a mental place where all the wordy shit-slinging no longer matters.

Yesterday's Thoughts

Information (the stuff of the imagination) not only transforms the material world, it becomes it. The adage “you are what you eat” has changed into “you are what you know” and since your knowledge depends on what information you accept as “fact,” you are what you believe!

Fred Alan Wolf, the quantum physics guru, wrote those thoughts in his book, Quantum’s Little Book Of Big Ideas. Fred is able to put esoteric thought into simple terms. We are what we believe. But the issue is we don’t know the scope of all our beliefs.

We all have obvious beliefs passed down through the generations. Those beliefs are our truths. We don’t question them. But as we know, most of those truths are under scrutiny at this point in physical time. We forget that our belief structure is not solid. It can change as we change. Associations and influences influence our beliefs, so that mental structure is in a state of knowledge remix almost every day.

Most of us believe certain truths can never change. We take those solid truths to the next life with us. What we don’t realize is those solid truths rearranged, reorganized, and reassessed at some point.

Truths are our perception of real. The truth in one person’s mind is not the truth in another mind. That mind has a perceived truth, and that brings our duplicity to a boil. We then begin the right and wrong, good and bad game, and we put conflicting truths on the stand of morality and righteousness to decide what the real truth is.

But truths are real to the all believers until those truths move to the valley of yesterday’s thoughts.

It is a huge challenge to present a long study of spiritual philosophy in short bursts of understanding but Manogue does just that with this book. Such a diverse array of thoughtful contemplations as Ken Wilber to Thomas Merton to Rumi and Rilke and like those last two poets, the poet in Manogue is allowed to come out and play alongside them. I found the short essays most useful, especially the summary of Wilber's Eight Awareness Waves encountered early in the book because I knew of him but not what his perspective was. Every essay illuminates the thoughts in the poem that precedes it at a soul understood level.

I also appreciated meeting some thinkers in Manogue's book who were totally new to me, even though I've studied such thinking for 3 decades now. Anyone who is just dipping their awareness into spiritual philosophy will come away from reading this book with a foundation that would have taken them a long time to acquire and from there they can go off on their own path to their own new discoveries.

When The Wind Blows The Grass Bends

If your desire is for good, the people will be good. The moral character of the ruler is the wind; the moral character of those beneath him is the grass. When the wind blows, the grass bends.

Confucius, the Chinese philosopher, wrote those thoughts over 2,300 years ago. He believed self-responsibility should rule people’s behavior. Most of us think we lost that connection through the years, and our government’s debacle demonstrates that fact. Our ego ignores the inner self, and we cling to the fear of separatism.

Plato, the Greek philosopher, lived about a hundred years after Confucius. He wrote about separatism in his work, The Republic. Plato’s theory of the Noble Lie is in that book. The Noble Lie was Plato’s way of bringing the behavior and the beliefs of the rulers to the surface of public opinion.

Plato described the concept of the Noble Lie this way: God filled everyone’s soul with gold, silver, and iron. But the working man and the farmer’s soul had less of those elements, so the ruler’s soul was the guardian. Rulers controlled the people using that perceived truth.

Our current religious and political leaders immerse themselves in a new version of the Noble Lie. These religious and political leaders consider themselves a special breed. They believe they must control the thoughts of their peers, not listen to them. This new version of the Noble Lie infiltrated our belief structure, and the message within it is now a perceived truth.

The form and delivery of the Noble Lie changed over the years. But the message is the same― political and religious leaders believe they control the people. Confucius said: Do not do to others what you do not want done to you. We elect political leaders that do unto others what they don’t do to themselves. Some religious leaders do the same thing.

The thought of using moral character, self-responsibility, and a united consciousness in politics, as well as religion, might take us to a place where when the wind blows and the grass bends in informed agreement. That thought is a prime ingredient of change in this age of self-direction and self-transformation.

As a reader who likes many genres, I have to say “Just an Old Fashioned Love Song Meets Stoic Man” by H.T. Manogue was not one that could be “classified;” reason being, every page is filled with a wealth of surprises. Yes, the tales, phrases, stanzas—all are filled with emotion, but they also delve into science, religion, and offer almost paranormal viewpoints.

This amazing writer actually creates this collection by utilizing the core of a long-time theory that many people believe is fact: That as humans, we are living a variety of lives in various locations and/or dimensions at one time. Now, I know there are many who shake their heads or roll their eyes at what they feel is nothing more than sci-fi beliefs, but this author makes quite a pertinent case for his insights.

Whether the subject he’s using is animals and nature, or fate, or events that seem to be pre-ordained, you feel a sense of enlightenment when you read the heartfelt words. The author states it best by explaining that there are particular words that “pop up” in the book many times over, such as consciousness, beliefs, and thoughts. This explanation makes perfect sense after you find yourself enjoying the journey you take through his essays and comments, some that are focused on the thoughts and beliefs of poets who lived in the early centuries.

This is not a book (as you can probably tell from the title itself) that will ‘conform’ to other books or become part of the ‘norm’ when speaking about fiction or non-fiction. And the beauty of it is the fact that it does not do these things; that the author worked to go against the grain and be different. This fact alone allows this book to stand out.

In addition, it’s extremely important to point out that H.T. Manogue did a great deal of research in order to gather unforgettable quotes that can help each and every one of us to better understand life and be able to shed that anxiety and worry we seem to run on nowadays. Words are offered from the minds of Emerson, Rumi, and more—even rare Indian tales from long ago are presented.

And after you read the collection, you will see that the happiness and calmness you feel will make this book one of your absolute favorites. “Just an Old Fashioned Love Song Meets Stoic Man” is wisdom in a nutshell, to say the least. Not only will you learn lessons, but you will be able to enjoy and laugh as well. The author has made sure of that!

Ken Wilber's Eight Awareness Waves

Here are the eight waves of awareness along with examples of each wave, as well as the percentage of the population and power in each of them. The population figures are old, so they are estimated.

The Beige or Instinctual Wave is all about survival. Necessities like food, warmth, water, sex, and safety rule immediate behavior. This wave exists in newborn infants, late-stage Alzheimer's patients, the elderly, starving masses, mentally ill street people, and PTSD victims. One percent of the population falls into this wave. They have zero percent of the social power.

The Purple or Animistic Wave focuses on magical spirits. This wave forms ethnic tribes, and believes and incorporates curses, blessings, and spells to determine events and future experiences.

This wave exists in family rituals, third-world cultures, gangs, corporate tribes, and athletic teams. ten percent of the population displays this awareness, and they incorporate one percent of the world’s social power.

The Red or Power God Wave lives by the urge to believe in powerful beings that include archetypal gods, goddesses, spirits, dragons, and feudal lords. They display characteristics of impulsiveness, egocentric behavior, and heroic mindset.

To Red, the world is a jungle full of bad guys and threats. They enjoy the self to the fullest and try to outfox, conquer, and dominate others.

This wave exists in kids in the terrible twos, feudal kingdoms, gang leaders, New-Age narcissism, epic heroes, rock stars, and soldiers of fortune.

They incorporate twenty percent of the population and have five percent of the social power.

The Blue or Mythic Wave incorporates the belief that life has purpose and meaning. The outcome results from the action of a powerful order or exalted being.

Religious order enforces a strict code of conduct based on the principles of right and wrong. Code violations demand serious consequences, but following the code yields some sort of lasting reward.

Blue believes in one right way and a wrong way to think about life, and a rigid social higher-order judges those that misbehave. This wave is strongly conventional and extremely conforming.

This wave exists in Puritan America, China, religious fundamentalists, Girl and Boy Scouts, and the moral majority.

They hold thirty percent of the social power and forty percent of the population.

The Orange or Scientific Wave likes to escape from the herd mentality. Orange seeks the truth using rational deduction and objective experiments. They believe in natural laws, and they learn, master, and use them as manipulation tools.

Orange are high achievers. And they are concerned with materialistic gains.

Orange believes the laws of science rule human behavior and the economy. To them, the world is a chessboard. Winners gain perks and prominence over the losers.

The earth’s resources are there for strategic gain.

This wave exists on Wall Street, the emerging middle class, the cosmetic industry, The Cold War, the enlightenment set, the fashion industry, and corporations.

They hold fifty percent of the power and thirty percent of the population.

The Green or Sensitive Wave is all about human bonding, ecological sensitivity, networking, and open communication. Green believes the human spirit must free itself from greed, divisiveness, and dogmas.

They cherish the earth, and feelings trump cold rationality.

They are against the hierarchy and cherish relationships.

Green also believes subjective thinking and conscious multiculturalism, along with a relativistic value system, bring harmony to the body, mind, and spirit.

This wave exists in postmodernism, Greenpeace, animal rights, human rights advocates, Canadian health care, humanistic psychology, and Netherlands idealism.

They hold fifteen percent of the social power and ten percent of the population.

The Yellow or Integrative Wave believes that knowledge and competency supersede status, power, and group sensitivity. The current world order results from different levels of reality, which contain unending probabilities and choices.

Spontaneity, flexibility, and functionality are Yellow’s highest priorities. Differences are lessons, and they are part of the natural flow of non-judgmental discernment.

Yellow holds five percent of the power and one percent of the population.

The Turquoise or Holistic Wave unites feelings with knowledge. Turquoise believes multiple levels of consciousness mesh into one conscious waking system.

They think there is a universal order, and that order supersedes the external rules of the blue and green waves.

The Holistic Wave also believes the whole of All There Is is greater than its parts. To Turquoise thinkers, all life unites in the free-flowing stream of the whole’s consciousness.

And they sense an unending unification within the energy that exists in all awareness.

This wave has one percent of the social power and 0.1 percent of the population.

The interesting point in all of this is we all can identify some of our beliefs in the first six waves. The beliefs in the last two waves are still foreign to some. But waves of awareness continue to wash over all of us. And when they do, we will experience life based on what level of awareness we choose to experience.

A Theory Of Everything

Human development is not a linear ladder but a fluid and flowing affair, with spirals, swirls, streams, and waves. It appears to be an almost infinite number of multiple modalities.

Ken Wilber’s book A Theory of Everything is a game-changer. The book explains human development in basic terms. We separate humans by race, religion, political views, and the social-economic power we strive to achieve.

But those qualities and beliefs are not what distinguish us from each other. There are waves of awareness that mix and mingle with each other as we play the lead part in our life experiences.

Wilbur and other psychologists like Don Beck, Christopher Cowan, and Clare Graves developed a map of all the structures, stages, levels, types, and waves of human development within the human consciousness. The result is a comprehensive snapshot of what they call Spiral Dynamics. Spiral Dynamics explains the stages within our development and how consciousness continues to expand as we experience each wave. Each wave of consciousness overlaps as well as interweaves and meshes waves of beliefs together in multiple admixtures. The multiple admixtures create mosaic choices, instant probabilities, and blended states of unfolding awareness.

Spiral Dynamics labels these eight waves of existence with colors as well as names. The first six waves are first-tier modes of awareness or thinking.

The next two waves are second-tier or integral levels of awareness. Each level holds a degree of social power and a certain percentage of the global population.

The focus in Spiral Dynamics is on types in people, not types of people.

Each level of awareness has certain core beliefs that impact how people view the world around them. More than 98% of the world population falls into one or more of the first six waves or levels of awareness. Each wave plays a role in the whole spiral. We discount other waves that don’t meet our concept of reality at certain stages of our developing awareness. But each wave is a reality, and everything connected to that wave has value to the perceivers in that wave.

Carl Sandburg wrote that poem. Somebody or something is always giving us something. We don't realize our choices play a role in what we experience. Somehow we became models built by a godly entity, and we travel through time with our free will switch in the off position. We allow the beliefs of others to become our beliefs. We sign on as a clone and act as if we had nothing to do with what we believe or who we are.

This veil of separation has kept us locked in a box of distorted mental Cracker Jacks with no prize inside. We wait quietly for someone else to open the box and let us out.

Our consciousness knew how to create before we manifested physically. We used the action of consciousness to expand our awareness of being physical. We function physically thanks to the non-physical energy that is the foundation for all consciousness. We exist in a stream of non-physical energy, and it flows through us all the time.

Believing in the power of individual consciousness dissolves the veil of separation, and we sense other aspects of the self. We create what we experience through our emotionally charged thoughts and beliefs. The people we blamed or praise for our experiences are there to assist us on our awareness journey. Phiz means self or face, and zzog meaning made. We are self-made forms of consciousness that continue to create in order to physically and emotionally feel our experiences.

I’m A Protoplasmal Primordial Atomic Globule

I can trace my ancestry back to a protoplasmal primordial atomic globule. Consequently, my family pride is something inconceivable. I can't help it. I was born sneering.

In 1885, Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, The Mikado, opened in London. The opera allowed the producers to satirize British politics and institutions by disguising them as Japanese. There's nothing funnier than holding a mirror up to the self and thinking we see someone else.

We want to be more than we think we are because we are more than we think. Our beliefs about the nature of consciousness hinder us from searching within for the protoplasm dripping from every cell.>br>
We are all part of the primordial atomic globule that exists within the creases of our consciousness. The inner self is inconceivable, yet we conceive it physically, to emotionally feel the experiences we create.

This reality is a comic opera, and we are the directors and actors that make our physical production special. We don't have to believe that fact for it to be real. Real only exists because our play tells us to think what we create is real.
